17 Daily Habits That Quietly Improve Your Life (Without Taking Over Your Day)

Spread the love

You can really change your life by changing really small daily habits. But, most people don’t know they can even do this. Instead, they think that in order to improve their life, they must make huge changes like:

  1. Starting a brand-new morning routine.
  2. Doing a complete diet overhaul.
  3. Having a perfectly organized house.
  4. Sticking to a super strict workout schedule.

But real life doesn’t usually work that way. Most of the time, the biggest improvements in your life will come from small things that you can repeat every single day. Because consistency is the key to achieving anything, even with small things.

As such, as you perform these tiny habits day in and day out, they compound. Then 1 minute becomes five, and 5 minutes becomes 20 minutes and before long, you’re living differently without feeling like you had to completely reinvent yourself overnight.

The tiny daily habits below are examples of things that’ll help you improve your life while feeling like nothing much has even changed! And, that’s the real beauty of small habits—they don’t feel like much until you look back six months later.

17 Daily Habits To Improve Your Life

1. Make Your Bed

First things first. Start by making your bed. This is the easiest daily habit to cultivate and it takes just a minute to complete.

Plus, making your bed is probably the easiest daily habit you can build, and it only takes about a minute.

Now, I’m not going to tell you that making your bed will completely transform your life. It won’t. But it does do two important things.

First, it instantly makes your bedroom look more put together, even if there are still a few things lying around. It’s amazing how much tidier a room feels once the bed is made.

Second, it gives you a small win first thing in the morning. Before you’ve answered emails, started work, or tackled your to-do list, you’ve already finished something. It might seem like a small thing, but those little wins have a way of building momentum and making it easier to keep getting more done throughout the day.

2. Drink Water Before Coffee

Before you drink your morning coffee, make sure you hydrate your body with water.

This helps to wake your body up before the caffeine kicks in and ensures that you’re not dehydrating yourself first thing in the morning.

I make this easier by keeping a bottle of water on my nightstand that I drink from the moment I open my eyes.

3. Spend Five Minutes Cleaning Something

You don’t have to wait for cleaning day to then have to clean all the things.

Instead, if you spend 5 minutes cleaning something every day this makes your home feel better. Sometimes, this helps me to cut down significantly on my cleaning time on my actual cleaning day. Other times, it just helps to keep spaces that are constantly cluttered or grimy feeling clean.

Some examples of places that can benefit from 5 minutes of cleaning include:

  1. Washing up any dishes left in the sink
  2. Wiping down the bathroom sink and counter
  3. Folding clean laundry
  4. Sweeping/Mopping the floors
  5. Wiping down the kitchen appliances

These are just 5 examples, but I’m sure you can come up with a bunch of other ideas that make sense.

4. Write Down Everything In Your Head

Mental clutter is just as bad as physical clutter. All those thoughts just constantly looping through your mind can really start to weigh you down.

As such, instead of trying to remember all those ideas, thoughts, appointments, meetings, things to buy, numbers, plans etc, just write them down.

Once you put those thoughts down on paper, your brain can finally relax. You move from trying to remember everything at once, to being able to focus on one thing at a time without feeling like your mind is running a hundred miles an hour. Or from feeling like you’ll forget important things if you don’t start them immediately!

5. Walk Every Day

I’ve been taking this daily habit very seriously over the past few months (with the irreplaceable help of my handy walking pad), and that, coupled with eating better has helped me shed 18 lbs so far!

I’m walking more for the health benefits than anything else and so I do 8000 to 10000 steps daily.

But, you don’t even have to do all that. Get yourself a step tracker (or use your iPhone health app if you have one or download a step tracker app on your phone) and pay attention to how many steps you’re getting each day. Chances are, it’s very little … maybe even less than 2000. Personally, I used to average 1300 steps per day which is totally insane but understandable since I work at my desk every day!

I said all this to say, that you don’t have to jump from less than 2000 steps per day to 10000 steps per day overnight.

Even doing 3000, 4000 or 5000 steps per day is way better than doing very little or none at all!

This will not only provide health benefits, but it will also help to improve your mood, increase your energy, and give your brain a chance to reset. If you need some help with this, check out these tips to walk 10,000 steps every day without quitting.

6. Finish One Thing Before Starting Another

A few months back, I realized I was constantly leaving little jobs half-finished because I kept moving on to the next thing before I was done.

I think the influence of short-form content (shorts etc) has started to rewire our brains to not be able to stay focused for long periods of time.

So I made an intentional decision to work on this and boy, has it made my days feel better.

Instead of a bunch of half-finished jobs, I’ve found that life feels a lot less chaotic when I simply finish what I’m doing before moving on to the next thing.

Of course, there are always exceptions. Sometimes you’ll get interrupted or something more important comes up, and that’s just part of life.

But when you can, try to resist the urge to jump from task to task.

And, you’ll be surprised how much calmer your day feels when you have fewer loose ends following you around.

It doesn’t have to be anything big, either. Start by finishing small, every day tasks like these:

  • Unload the dishwasher completely instead of stopping halfway and leaving the rest for later.
  • Fold and put away one small load of laundry instead of letting the basket sit on the bed or couch all day.
  • Finish replying to one email or text before opening another app or checking social media.
  • Put groceries away as soon as you get home instead of leaving bags on the counter “for a minute.”
  • Wipe the counter and put the spray away instead of cleaning halfway and leaving supplies out.
  • Finish making one room look decent before moving to another room and starting a new mess.

7. Put Things Away Instead Of Putting Them Down

This one tiny habit makes a huge difference in your life. Instead of dropping things wherever you happen to be, put things where they belong immediately.

By doing this every day, with everything — or most things — you’re dramatically cutting down on clutter.

8. Check Your Calendar

Check your calendar daily. This just takes a minute, but it helps to eliminate a surprising amount of stress.

I mean once you know what tomorrow or even today is like in terms of appointments, meetings, birthdays, bills due, etc. there are far fewer surprises waiting for you. And in my experience, fewer surprises almost always means less stress.

9. Spend Less Than You Earn

Improving your life isn’t only about wellness. Having financial peace is another great way to improve your life too.

You most likely won’t be able to achieve peace of mind when it comes to your finances solely from building the daily habit of spending less than you earn. But it’s a great place to start.

Plus, building that habit puts you light years ahead of the majority of people who spend way more than they earn everyday and who are constantly living in a deficit.

You still need to spend on essentials. But, you can easily start spending less than you earn by increasing your income (easy side hustles, extra shifts, overtime etc.) or by cutting out a few non-essentials that won’t completely change your life.

10. Read 10 Pages

We spend so much time scrolling and watching shorts, I think many of us are forgetting how to read and perhaps even spell.

So, reading a few pages of a good book everyday not only helps you learn something new, but it’ll help you stay sharp.

And just reading those 10 pages a day makes it so that you’ll finish quite a few books in a year!

11. Go Outside

Sometimes, we can go days without stepping outside for some fresh air. Making it a daily habit to go outside for 5 or even 10 minutes helps to improve your mental well-being especially if you’re always indoors.

12. Prep One Thing For Tomorrow

Choosing to prep one thing today in time for tomorrow won’t drastically change your life. But it will make the next day go smoother, which in itself is an improvement.

I like to lay out my clothes for tomorrow today. Since if I leave it for the same day, I tend to spend a lot of time thinking of what to wear (then settling for my go-to comfort clothes, which I’ve worn over and over again, and I’ve started trying to dress better now)

So, this is what I usually do the night before to eliminate the decision fatigue I’ll have if I wait until the next day.

I also like to prep for tomorrow’s meals (if I didn’t do enough prep on the weekend). I chop, wash, sometimes portion ingredients in advance so cooking feels like a breeze when I’m tired and hungry.

There are a ton of other things you can prep for tomorrow such as packing your work bag or purse, charging your phone or laptop, filling your water bottle, putting your keys and wallet by the door, making tomorrow’s lunch or prep breakfast.

Just pick one and do it every day and see how it makes your life better overall.

13. Limit Doom Scrolling

You can spend hours every day doom scrolling if you let yourself do so.

Now, I’m not asking you to quit social media. But just cutting back by about 20 minutes per day can give you some extra time that you can use for something more productive. Those twenty minutes could be the difference between saying “I never have time” and finally doing something you’ve been putting off for weeks.

14. Do One Thing You’ve Been Avoiding

We tend to avoid things that we think are hard. But, sometimes they aren’t hard at all. In fact, the time spent worrying about them is sometimes worst than actually doing that thing or things.

Every day, ask yourself what you’ve been avoiding and then jump straight in and tackle it. You might not finish it all in one day. It might indeed be just as hard or uncomfortable. But, the mind works in such a way that as you tackle this thing (on that day) or a little at a time every day (if it takes more than one day), you’ll start to think of solutions to solve this thing and get it done.

So whether you’ve been avoiding an important phone call, working on or starting a project, paperwork or whatever else that thing may be, give it some time today and you’ll be better for it.

15. Say No More Often

It’s very uncomfortable to say no. Especially to the people you love or care about and if you’re used to saying yes automatically.

You’re likely often saying yes to plans you don’t really want to attend, to helping when you already have too much on your plate, to extra tasks, extra favors, extra commitments, extra everything.

Doing this can really make a week feel packed even when you don’t have the time, energy, or desire to do them.

So if you’re constantly feeling stretched too thin, this habit can make a huge difference. Just practice saying no a few times every day. You don’t have to ostracize everyone, or become rude or selfish, but just take a little pause before you agree to everything and get stuck figuring it all out.

Your mental health will thank you for it.

By the way, sometimes the answer really is a yes, so I’m not asking you to say no to everything.

But sometimes instead of an automatic yes, you can try “I can’t this time,” or “That won’t work for me,” or even, “Let me check and get back to you.”

Always remember, your feelings, your time, and your energy is important too! And you can’t always be everyone’s rock.

16. End The Day With A Quick Reset

Spend ten minutes getting your home ready for tomorrow.

Load the dishwasher.

Clear the counters.

Straighten the living room.

Start the laundry.

Tomorrow instantly feels easier.

17. Save A Little Money Every Day

Most of us wake up every day and immediately start working toward paying for life’s expenses.

The electricity bill, the internet, Rent or the mortgage, groceries, gas, insurance etc.

By the way, there’s nothing wrong with that because those things have to be paid. But somewhere along the way, it’s easy to forget about looking out for your future self. Which is why I think saving a little money every day is such a powerful habit.

And I really do mean a little.

If all you can afford to save today is $1, save the dollar. Right now, the amount isn’t the most important part, the habit is. Once saving becomes something you do automatically, it gets much easier to increase the amount later when your budget allows. A lot of people wait until they have extra money to start saving, but for many of us, that extra money never seems to appear.

So, instead, start with whatever you can right now, even if it’s just a dollar a day.

I mean, you spend money every single day of your life (or most days anyways), so why not try to save some money every day too?

Why These Daily Habits Actually Work

Now, you don’t have to do all seventeen habits every single day. That would probably leave you feeling overwhelmed instead of motivated.

Instead, pick three to five habits that solve the problems you’re currently facing and try to do these every day for the next month to see how your life improves.

You’ll be surprised at how much it does improve without needing a complete lifestyle makeover, or sticking to an all-or-nothing routine.

Over time, those tiny actions add up to noticeable changes in how your home feels, how your body feels, and how you handle everyday life.
